Aromatherapy combines the soothing, healing touch of massage with the therapeutic properties of essential oils. These oils are obtained from plants and have been renowned for centuries for their remedial powers. Aromatherapy is an holistic treatment which can have a profound effect on the mind, body and emotions. Aromatherapists work in hospitals, nursing homes, natural health centres or run their own practice.

After sucessfully completed the course you will have gained sufficient skills to practice as an Aromatherapist. You can further develop your skills by attending one of our practical tutorials, after which you will be qualified to join professional bodies including the Complementary Medical Association (CMA) and the Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists.

After passing the final examination you will receive a diploma and will be entitled to use the letters C.H.Ed Dip Aroma (Complementary Health Education Diploma in Aromatherapy)..

The course consists of 12 home study modules covering the following subjects:

• History of Aromatherapy The background and origins of Aromatherapy.

• Aromatherapy and stress Physiology of Stress and the holistic approach using Aromatherapy.

• Neurology Study of the Nerves and the systems to which they belong.

• Psychology Introduction to Psychology

• Study of Essential oils A comprehensive study of these oils including their chemical constituents, properties, uses, precautions and contra-indications.

• Massage Techniques the different massage strokes, massage contra-indications, initial consultation and a detailed full body massage sequence and remedial massage techniques.

• Diet and nutrition Study of Vitamins, Minerals etc. necessary for a healthy diet.

• Meridians and Accupressure This covers acupressure techniques based on the Japanese therapy known as Shiatsu.

• First aid Basic first aid procedures.

• Consultation procedures Information on how to conduct a consultation

• Setting up in business Advice on how to set up your practice including premises, equipment, advertising etc.

• Case studies During the second half of this course the student will be required to compile a number of case studies to be submitted with the final examination paper.

This course also includes our Diploma course in Anatomy and Physiology to provide a grounding in these areas:

• Human anatomy Chemical organization of the body, Body tissue, Skeletal system, Muscular system.

• Physiology Study of the Lymphatic, Endocrine, Digestive, Respiratory, Excretory, Cardiovascular, Nervous, Reproductive, Urinary systems and the Skin.

Each of our courses is made up of a series of 'Modules'. These are written in an easy to understand style with practical examples. Each module contains a test paper which is returned to your tutor for assessment. This allows you to benefit from the guidance of your tutor at each step of your training.

All of our tutors are professionals, each practicing in the therapies they teach. This means that they can offer a wealth of experience as well as the theory and background to the subject. You receive instruction from an expert in the field, giving you personalized assistance, and assessing your progress. Our courses also include the practical skills you will need to succeed as a complementary therapist, including how to promote your practice and professional guidelines

Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) validation is available with this course at an additional cost of £199.00. This includes VTCT registration (£12.00 discount if already registered), assessment books and a 2 day validation weekend including final examination, at the end of your studies.

Course requirements

Prior to enrolment students should have experienced at least one aromatherapy treatment, before enrolling on the course. Our courses are written in clear English and studied by students all over the world, many of whom are not native English speakers. However, for those for whom English is not their first language, upper intermediate reading comprehension and writing skills are required. (ie. grammatical errors will occur but do not create misunderstanding)
